Bill Viola's Giant Video Installations Invade the Grand Palais
At the Grand Palais, an American artist named Bill Viola will be honored with an exhibition from March 5 until July 21, 2014. For the event, 20 major works created by Viola will be showcased. In this way, visitors can discover the bold and daring world of the video artist who transmits pure emotion to his spectators while at the same time questioning the very nature of human beings.
The artist has already had exhibitions at internationally prestigious art institutions such as New York's Museum of Modern Art and London's National Gallery. He has also exhibited at the Guggenheim Museum and made appearances at the MAM (Musée d'art moderne) Paris in 1983 and the Fondation Cartier in 1990. Bill Viola's legacy in the contemporary art world is therefore already well established, and now the artist will be welcomed into a space large enough to house his next great works.
Indeed, for his next exhibition, Viola's video pieces will be protected onto giant screens at the Grand Palais. This gives spectators the chance to witness the art in large format and truly reflect on the artist's message. Viola has used video as a medium for more than 40 years. He uses video in order to provoke viewers to ask questions such as, 'Who am I?', 'Where am I?', and 'Where am I going?'. In fact, those three questions serve as the three themes of the exhibition, and the videos are divided into these three sections.
Paris, a city known as a bastion of culture, is the perfect place for reflecting on the nature and beauty of the self. Guests staying at one of the Sister Hotels Champs-Elysées should not hesitate to take that journey with the art of Bill Viola. The Grand Palais, located on 3 Avenue du Général Eisenhower in the 8th arrondissement of Paris, is just a short stroll away.
