Capriccio: The Final Opera
From January 19 to February 14, 2016, the Palais Garnier invites the opera lovers to enjoy the German composer Richard Strauss’ final opera, Capriccio.
Capriccio’s libretto was written by Strauss in 1941, in collaboration with Clemens Heinrich Krauss, who wrote most of the final part of it. However, the idea of the opera originated from the Austrian writer Stefan Zweig in the 1930’s.
Capriccio is a one-act “conversation piece of music” as Strauss describes it. It was first performed on the stage of the Nationaltheater München on October 28, 1942, with the conduction of Krauss.
Today's production lasts approximately two hours and a half without an interval. It unites the German conductor Ingo Metzmacher and the Canadian opera director Robert Carsen.
