Modern Art Legend Niki de Saint Phalle Honored at the Grand Palais

From September 17, 2014 until February 2, 2015, the Grand Palais welcomes a legend of modern art for an immense art exhibition. The exhibition consists of a retrospective of Niki de Saint Phalle, one of the most popular artists of the late 20th century. This is the first major exhibition of Niki de Saint Phalle's works in at least 20 years.

Self-taught artist Niki de Saint Phalle passed away in 2002, and her legacy has only grown since this time. Contemporary of Andy Warhol, she displayed a similar iconoclastic style and inspired vision of pop culture. Also inspired by Dubuffet and Pollock, she explored themes of political radicalism and feminism along with crafting colorful characterizations of her subjects.

The last big exhibition of Niki de Saint Phalle took place 20 years ago. As a result, the 2014/2015 retrospective at the Grand Palais will allow the art world to see her works with a renewed sense of appreciation. The exhibit features all aspects of the artist, who was at the same time a painter, mixed media artist, sculptor, engraver, performance artist and experimental filmmaker.

More than 200 works and archived objects will be on display over the 2,000 square meters of the exhibition space of the Grand Palais. The exhibit will be organized chronologically and thematically to provide meaningful context for each of the works. Moreover, the exhibit will feature clips of Niki de Saint Phalle explaining her motivations and intentions, referencing specific works that visitors can see with their own eyes.
