The Musée d'Art Moderne, Where Art and Design Collide

At an exhibition called 'Decorum' the Musée d'Art Moderne, the modern art museum of the city of Paris, shines a spotlight on the art of textiles. Going on until February 9, 2014, this exhibit reveals more than 100 carpets and woven pieces created by modern artists such as Pablo Picasso. Moreover, the event also includes the work of contemporary artists who work in the art world today, elevating textiles to more than just the useful, everyday material of our lives.

From unknown textile artists to traditional artists who have dabbled in textile making, this exhibit offers a comprehensive view of the various eras, movements and geographic styles that make up the history of modern textile art.

Up until the end of the 19th century, the link between art and textiles was tenuous. It usually did not go beyond the artist's attempt to replicate the texture or elaborate design of a rug on a traditionally painted canvas. However, in the 20th century, artists began to go beyond the borders of classic art and some even learned how to weave rugs and textiles themselves.

These modern artists took their inspiration from ancient woven works while incorporating modern geometric patterns, ethnics motifs and even political messages. Plus, new weaving techniques, like digital weaving, have allowed modern artists to be even more creative and bold with textiles.
