Werther: Opera Bastille

From January 20, 2016, to February 4, 2016, Opera Bastille, the fine Parisian opera house, welcomes Jules Massenet’s opera, Werther.

About Jules Massenet:

Jules Émile Frédéric Massenet, a French composer who was born on May 12, 1842, in Montaud, France. He studied at the Conservatoire de Paris and wrote a considerable number of operas along with many oratorios and ballets. On August 13, 1912, Massenet died, in Paris, France.

 

About Werther:

Inspired by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s epistolary novel, The Sorrows of Young Werther, Massenet begun composing Werther in 1885. However, he didn’t finish the composition of this wonderful piece before 1887. Werther’s libretto was written by the trio Édouard Blau (1836 -1906), Paul Milliet (1855 -1924), and Georges Hartmann (1843 -1900). Today, this masterpiece is reckoned as one of Massenet’s most frequently performed operas.

 

About the show:

This work is conducted by Michel Plasson and directed by Benoît Jacquot. It unites a group of talented operatic singers: Piotr Beczala, Stéphane Degout, Paul Gay, Rodolphe Briand, Lionel Lhote, Elīna Garanča, Elena Tsallagova, Arto Sarkissian, and Gemma Ní Bhriain.

Werther is a four-act opera. It includes 5 scenes and lasts 3 hours and 25 minutes with 2 intervals.
